Ploughing Match Show Report September 27th, 2009
Glorious sunshine for the Surrey County Ploughing Match and Country Fair at Loseley in September last year helped make this popular family day out another great success.
More than 12,000 visitors enjoyed watching and taking part in country activities. There was a record turnout of 86 ploughmen and a fine entry of horse teams, providing a fabulous spectacle as they competed side by side across a 73 acre field.
Activities for the public included fly fishing lessons, clay shooting, 4x4 driving, dog agility and terrier and lurcher racing. Arena displays included Amy Hatcher, dog trainer extraordinaire, beagles and hounds, falcons and gun dogs and racing pigeons.
And everyone loved the trio of tame otters playing with Daphne Neville.
The country fair was the finale of the society’s Surrey Farm and Food Week, which saw hundreds of people exploring local farms and finding out about the food produced in the Surrey countryside. One of the highspots was the open day at Imbhams Farm Granary, where there was a mini Farmer’s Market and demonstrations as well as cows, sheep and poultry to see.
More than 100 people enjoyed the dairy farm day at Goldstone Farm, Polesden Lacey, 130 went to the Hampton Estate walk, 100 went to Sherbourne Farm, Albury, 60 to Hardwick Park, Chertsey and 50 to Norbury Park. Fabulous autumn weather held all week.
