County Ploughing Match and
Country Fair breaks records
Almost 12,000 people enjoyed a brilliant rural day out in long-awaited
sunshine at Loseley on Sunday, making up for the awful weather for the
County Show in May.
Attendance at the Surrey County Ploughing Match and Country Fair broke all
records as families turned out en masse to watch the tractors and horse
teams, dog activities and country sports.
It was a real hands-on show, where people could try clay shooting, 4x4
driving, fly fishing and dog agility. Rural crafts were well represented
with woodcraft at the Surrey Hills marquee, chair making, stick-making, a
forge, spinning and weaving, knot making and fly-tying. There was a farmer’s
market and food and craft marquees, dray and mini train rides, and classic
car display.
The show made a triumphant finale to a record breaking Surrey Farm and Food
Week too. More than 1,000 people took advantage of the invitations to come
onto farms right across Surrey and find out about the farming heritage of
the Surrey Hills and see how conservation and food production work together.
For example, around 250 people attended the Goldstone Farm open day at Polesden Lacey, enjoying trailer rides, craft demonstrations and teas and
finding out about dairy farming. They donated £360.73 to Hope for Heroes.
The same number attended the Hampton farm walk at Seale, and all the farmers
involved in the programme of events were delighted with the response from
the public. The Surrey menu meals at local pubs could have sold out several
times over.
The ploughing at Loseley attracted big crowds, especially for the vintage
and steam ploughs and the majestic horse teams. The trophies were presented
by the President of Surrey County Agricultural Society, Sir Graham
Wilkinson.
